They normally only attack fish that they may mistake for other bettas. Females can be kept together in groups of 3-5 or more, but it is risky if you are a beginner with fish. Bettas actually get targetted by other fish, rather than the other way around, because of their long bright fins.
They are some mistake in the population, you may take a look on website on fishes ( your fishes don't need the same things in a tank, don't go together, etc)
