Personally, I don't understand why you shit on yourself so much on your human art. You're a fantastic artist all around from what I've seen (however I can also sort of understand it in the sense that I think that all my art sucks - including the stuff I do by pencil that doesn't get posted since I don't have a scanner - but people tell me it rocks). It sort of bugged me that you thought so badly of your human artwork a few years ago when it looked so much more realistic than most people's art that I'd seen at the time.
Now I can understand it better and feel a bit worse about criticizing you so much for hating your own art so much since I feel that way myself about my own art. It was just really hard for me to understand how someone could be so good and believe they were so bad, but I've grown up a lot since then and now realize that no matter how good you are, you will never be satisfied with your own art (in most people's cases).
Anyways, I've always loved your art - especially your comics and your book "Spike". Can't wait for it to get published
Sorry if I sound like I'm being a dick, I don't mean to be.
i like them both '......what comes to mind when i see this: the hair is too straight down....it doesnt look like it's following the cranial structure too much...but this might just be me.. it just doesn't look like the hair is hanging normally.....like it's being pulled straight down.......idk just can't put my finger on it exactly but this is mostly for younger spike.. and as always...... love the expressions facial features are really good, especially the way you draw the eyes! spike looks haunted and angry... the younger spike looks like he still haven't accepted why his life is the way it is....reminds me of a confused/hurt/angry child... while older spike looks more...experienced...jaded....like..."he's been through so much, why should it matter if something more happens?" ya know?
Wow! Gorgeous work! I'd have to agree with the some of the others though about how there might be little too much muscling in the neck on the younger spike portrait. That being said, I wouldn't have even recognized that if it had not been said before. Excellent work ...... Is it just me or are his eyes greener in the older version? O_o
My first thought was that maybe they are painted a bit too smooth. I won't say I know a lot about your characters, but they look to be a bit on the rough end - at least in this picture. I would try painting them more roughly and perhaps with a bit of texture. Maybe that way you can get them to look more like in your sketchbook.
Sorry to bother but I think Oomi has said Spike is not supposed to be typical good-looking guy. Sam has a crush on him so he sees him in a different light than other people do, more good-looking and that kind of stuff. In reality Spike looks like an ordinary guy. Sorry I'm bad at explaining things in English, it's not my native language.
Oh, you don't bother me (: Yeah, you're probably right but the first picture I saw of spike was "You know nothing of hell" and there he looks actually pretty good. So I always imagined him looking this way... You don't have to be sorry for your english ^-^ It's not my native language either.
That's okay. ^^ I think Oomi said somewhere that in her earlier drawings Spike looked too goodlooking and she tried to make him look more ordinary and less handsome. And she has improved so much especially in human-drawings. I personally like the ordinary-looking-Spike more than the earlier versions of him.
its been a looooooooooong tiem but my suggestion is to just enjoy and create art with absolutely no care how it turns out and just to have aton of fun on it. might be a bit refreshing! awesome job and great job as always with your sense of form and lighting. dont take it the wrong way but working on human ears might be where you can improve a bit more on! your skills never fail to impress and inspire me! have a wonderful day
I had this exact same question! She answered it very well too! In the novel her characters will be human so that anyone not very familiar with her anthro-artwork won't be confused. It also makes the novel easier to relate to for some newcomers. However, she only mentions certain details about her characters, such as the way they dress, the way they smile, hair color and so forth, so that we the readers can make the final choice between anthro and human ourselves. The only thing that might be confusing if you're imagining them as anthro, however, is skin color, but that would be the only detail you might have to overlook in order to imagine them that way. Hope this was helpful!
So she does not want to reveal..lets say the "form" of the characters..so we are alowed to imagine then in our own special way! (after ading the characteristics you said me of course) Thats really cool! But..didnt she said..that her novel will contain prictures? (her digital drawings)
She has tried to only mention details that both anthro's and humans can share (hair color, clothes, expressions), but details such as skin color (which she will mention to avoid confusion) will ultimately make them human. But thanks to her method, she said that if we wanted to imagine them as anthro, it be shouldn't a problem. As for her novel containing pictures... Not sure. I've never heard her mention including pictures in the novel. She may have and I just don't remember. That would be a good question to ask her. I really like seeing this kind of communication within her fan base too! I think it's good for the artist to see that her fans are helping each other fill in the blanks... It shows a healthy community
Hahahaha i am glad to recieve help and also to provide some. Εven though i personaly wasnt used to like characters like anhros i was really suprised by Spike.. ! I also draw amazingly but i was never able to give personality to my characters (i have also started to draw athros) I just cant believe she managed to create such a deep character.. just amazing ! (I would really like to upload some of my drawings but i am afraid people here are bond to steal characters..what do you think ) :/
I really can't say for sure... I would like to say that you should be safe, but character and art theft is what led Oomi to stop posting SPIKE chapters. You can always just try and hope for the best! I would be interested to see them for sure!
Ohhh thanks so much "<3" xD But i prefer to keep things safe.. Even though either of us uploads something, it would take years for both of us to be promoted and obtain as many fans as eny other premium mebership member.. for example.. Alise has Oomi for over 4 years.. and she only has about 100 comments at each drawing.. Facebook is better to promote yourself in my opinion, as only friendly eyes are to take a glimpse at your work of art This site contains many disturbed people... like furries e.c.t..
First of all; I think both of them are wonderful portraits. They're well done and detailed. The only thing that doesn't feel exactly 'right' to me is that the faces don't exactly portray an age difference. Faces change a lot when people grow older. Especially men's faces. While boys seem to still have some feminine characteristics to their faces when they're still a child (round face, big eyes), men tend to have more square faces. The portrait of the older Spike looks fine to me. The younger Spike should have a bit less muscle definition in the neck and shoulders and a smoother face. When digital art, it's a nice trick to always make the faces of kids and young woman more smooth (by using smooth brushes) and making the faces of men a bit more rough. In this way the difference is easier to spot
I love the expression on the face, though. It shows that the character has been through a lot ^^
